Raymondionymidae

Common name:

Number of species:

1

Size Range:

2-3mm

Tarsi:

4-4-4. Lobed.

Description:

A family with one British representative, Ferreria marqueti, (Aubé, 1863), these are blind, soil-dwelling weevils which can be immediately recognised by their lack of eyes.  First found in Britain at Kew Gardens, the species is also known to occur at scattered sites in Surrey, Kent and Middlesex and is thought to be rare, although the difficulty of surveying subterranean species means it is likely to be under-recorded.  Appears to be associated with the roots of conifers.
